Each batch at the AJTS does not exceed 15 thus making for personalised attention to each student. The Club bears the boarding, lodging, clothing , educational and medical expenses of trainees. Trainees are apprenticed to various stables during the final two years of training and permitted to ride in races framed only for apprentices after which they are permitted to participate in open races.
One of the heartening features of the Hyderabad Race Club is the Apprentice Jockeys Training School. Started in 1983. Lt. Col. S. L. Reddy was the first principal of the Apprentice Jockeys Training School. So far 4 batches of apprentices passed out from this school and the training of 5th batch of boys is under progress.
The basic principle behind the Apprentice Jockeys School was to take raw youngsters between the age of 13 to 16 and gradually turn them into horsemen. To achieve this objective the Hyderabad Race Club recruited India's greatest Jockey Mr. Pandu Khade as its first principal and Mr. O.K.Jimmy as the Manager. Lt.Col.SL.Reddy (Retd), an internationally reputed horsemen, took over charge from Pandu Khade when he retired.
These three in tandem gradually over a period of five years harness the raw skills of these boys and turn them into full - fledged jockeys. At no stage do the batch of trainees exceed fifteen, thus ensuring absolute personalised attention. Once selected the apprentices are boarded in the Club premises and are sent home only in April and May. The Club bears all their boarding, lodging, clothing educational and medical expenses. Although the ultimate aim is to turn trainees into competent jockeys , they are made to go through an educational course which ensures that before they graduate from the App. Jockeys School, they have completed their matriculation.
These methods obviously seem to be successful as results-show that the first batch of HRC Apprentice Jockeys have won over a hundred and twenty races so far competing against the best at Malakpet.
